Services for Parents

Helping your child with ASD successfully navigate their school life

More than anyone else in life, parents are the ones who wish for their child/ren on the Autism Spectrum to become successful and independent, and to achieve their goals and aspirations. Ruth Cornell provides the tools and training to help parents better understand their child as an individual, successfully navigate the education system and become the primary advocates for their child’s learning.

Leadership for Parents Program

Becoming your child’s Inclusive Team Leader

Your child is relying on you to lead them to success. By enrolling in this Leadership for Parents program, you can successfully guide your child to independence and beyond.

The Leadership for Parents program aims to empower parents to take on the role of advocate for their child’s learning within the mainstream education system. It provides them with the skills, understanding and tools required to lead their child’s ASD support team – which may include teachers, aides, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech therapists etc. It allows parents to build the leadership skills required to create and work with a successful team such as relationship building, inclusive thinking, negotiation and communication skills, and provides a range of tools for goal setting and scheduling tasks.

The workshop includes:

  • A 2.5 hour workshop about effective teamwork, communication and the learning environment
  • Training in using the Wheel of Success and Inclusive Team Approach
  • A full set of program resources, including guide book and workbooks for each team member
  • Ideas about successfully advocating for your child within their school environment

One-on-One Consultations

Providing hands on support when you need it most

While Ruth’s main focus is on helping schools and parents develop skills and systems to support students on the Autism Spectrum independently, she also handles a small number of individual cases each year, offering one-on-one consultation, school observations and Team Leadership services with your child’s ASD support team.

In most cases, these will be where your child’s needs have been unsuccessfully met in the past and there have been serious repercussions, such as bullying, depression, school refusal etc. It is hoped that after some initial support, you will be able to take over the Team Leadership role for your child on a longer term basis.
