Helping students with ASD succeed at school

Ruth Cornell is dedicated to working with schools to help them support students with ASD within their school community. By working with teachers, school leaders, aides and other support staff, Ruth helps  ensure the best possible learning outcomes for these students – academically, socially and emotionally.

Team Leadership Workshop

The Inclusive Team Approach for Schools

The Team Leadership Program has been designed to provide an Inclusive Team environment for students with ASD within your school community. The Inclusive Team usually consists of a Team Leader, parents, teachers, integration aides and outside professionals (e.g. psychologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, etc) with the single aim of assisting each student successfully navigate the education system. The program provides Team Leaders with the skills, systems and understanding to enhance the communication process between team members, and successfully implement intervention programs for each student, according to their individual needs. The program is based on taking the positive approach developed by Ruth Cornell, using the Wheel of Success and Inclusive Team Approach.

Team Leaders are usually chosen for their leadership qualities and willingness to support students with ASD with their learning and may be class teachers, Special Education teachers or the Principal/Vice Principal. Parents may also be Team Leaders for an individual child.

The workshop includes:

  • A one day PD and discussion about ASD and the Learning Environment
  • Training in using the Wheel of Success and Inclusive Team Approach
  • A full set of program resources, including guide book and workbook, in your preferred format to reproduce at your convenience
  • Ideas about how to get the whole school onboard

Benefits of the program…

  • Develops cohesiveness throughout the entire school and an understanding of the challenges faced by students with ASD in your school community
  • Provides a simple model everyone can work by, supported by effective organisation tools to record and manage the process
  • Provides current and relevant strategies, based on the latest research about ASD
  • Develops understanding within the school regarding any individual with ASD within the school community, and respect for each individual’s strengths, challenges and goals
  • Enhances parent/teacher relationships

Build-a-Workshop

A customised program for schools

Build-a-Workshop is a customised Professional Development Course, enabling the school to design a course, in consultation with myself and other Team members, based on the needs of the individual students at the school.

It includes:

  • Consultation with the Principal/Team Leader to discuss requirements
  • Individual observations of each child (conducted by Ruth Cornell)
  • Program designed to suit the briefing and observations
  • Overall program/course discussed with the Principal/Team Leader and desired outcomes
  • Delivery of the course

Benefits of the Build-a-Workshop program…

  • Reduces teachers’ time outside the classroom and enhances information retention, as only material relevant to the needs of the students within their school community is delivered.
  • Assists each individual student to succeed, by enabling their teachers to understand their needs on a case-by-case basis.
  • Develops a positive culture within the school community towards teaching students with ASD, as the Wheel of Success and Inclusive Team Approach provides the understanding, tools and resources to work successfully with each student.
